Windowmakers Win Prestigious Award
On September 2nd we attended the Westpac Auckland North Business Awards 2011 where Windowmakers were finalists in two categories: Actionmail Excellence in Marketing and Mitre 10 Excellence in Service Delivery. It was an honour to be selected as a finalist from over 150 entries. In the Service Delivery category alone there were 27 businesses that entered so to be selected as a finalist really highlighted our commitment to providing outstanding service to our customers.
It was an honour to be amongst other fantastic businesses who are all striving for excellence.

Winner of Business Excellence Awards 2010

We are delighted that Windowmakers Ltd is the proud winner of our catergory, having been selected by the independent judging panel for the 2010 Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards in Blackcat Consulting Employer of Choice.
The award category recognises a business that manages and develops its people and demonstrates its commitment to people through its work practices and philosophies. The winners of the 2010 Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards were announced at a gala dinner on Friday, 3 September 2010 at the North Shore Events Centre
Windowmakers is honoured and proud to have received the Blackcat Consulting Employer of Choice Award at the 2010 Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards on 3 September.
Getting up on stage to receive the award was a memorable moment for us. The Awards have been going for 13 years, continually rising in prestige, and this year attracted 144 entries from all corners of the North Shore and Rodney.
A 13-strong panel of independent judges whittled down the entries into a list of finalists. To make the short list was a great feeling; to hear our name read out on the night was incredibly fulfilling, given the level of competition.
A company is nothing without its staff, so creating a family like work environment has been a top focus for Windowmakers. It was a great feeling for the judges to recognise our employee relations efforts and commitment to the social aspect of corporate responsibility.
A harmonious workplace comes from an accepting and supportive environment where everyone works towards the same goal, and staff buy in to a company’s core values. A big part of our business success has come from retaining staff.
We have tried to make Windowmakers a place where people with English as a second language, single parents, and people with mental health issues are welcome and valued
employees.
It was great to see the Excellence Awards judges note:
· the family friendly environment at our Silverdale base
· Windowmakers’ focus on providing training opportunities (including financial budgeting)
· attention to work flow, and the efficient interaction between front office and the factory floor
· the company’s commitment to quarterly reviews.
The judges listed some opportunities we can seize to do things even better, and that is another excellent outcome of entering the awards.
Knowing Windowmakers is achieving excellence is great, and the certificate will take pride of place on the showroom wall. But entering this competition was also about the opportunity to learn from business owners throughout the North Shore – it is amazing what you can pick up from talking to people who have successful businesses in all kinds of fields.
This was the first year Rodney businesses were able to enter the awards, and it was great to see two category wins from our district.
Windowmakers proud to be North Shore’s ‘employer of choice’
Magic Teamwork
Windowmakers is a brand representative (a large customer and fabricator of) of First Windows and Doors, the Magic's primary sponsor. I was honoured to attend the dinner, which was an opportunity for the franchise to thank its sponsors, and acknowledge the hard work from management and the Magic board during the season.
The Magic mantra is 'Heart, Power, Magic' and these values are core in everything it does. There is a lot to learn from the dedicated management style of Sheryl Dawson (acting CEO), and Noeline Taurua's holistic coaching approach. She believes passion is the key to achieving success in any profession, and you must first understand yourself before you can succeed.
Like any other business, this franchise has had its challenges: balancing finances; retaining motivation when the team went through a bad patch; dealing with fierce competition. The way it tackles these challenges means First Windows BOP Magic is a complete package in my view.
I was lucky to be seated at a table with Irene van Dyk and her husband Christie. What a lovely woman, with the interesting challenge of traveling to Waikato and back to train, and travelling again for home and away matches. She has balance in her life by holding down a part time job as a Wellington teacher. Irene gets her sporting ability and determination from her mother, who at 71 is a champion power walker. Irene amused us with her report of having to run to keep up during her mum's 15km training power walks at a pace of 4km an hour. An unwavering smile greeted the constant autograph requests which came Irene's way during the evening, encapsulating why I admire the Magic.
The players are down to earth, real people. They are passionate and driven about their sport, but respond positively to a myriad of requests from sponsors and fans.
As I returned home to the North Shore I felt honoured to have been part of these girls' support network. They are the Magic, and they gave back a little bit that memorable evening.
