Made To Measure Service
“Windowmakers is by far the best window and joinery supplier in Auckland. They don’t cut corners and they don’t compromise on quality. I truly believe you get what you pay for.” Russell Biggs, Biggs Construction.

Russell Biggs has been involved in the building industry for over fifty years, and there’s not much he doesn’t know about design, planning, construction and managing all the sub-contractors and suppliers involved in the business. His son Jarred owns and runs Biggs Construction Ltd, with Russell in the role of design and project assistance; he says “We work with clients to build their dream homes from scratch. Our focus is on delivering high end architectural builds and we pride ourselves on our attention to detail, and providing outstanding customer service.”

Windowmakers and Biggs Construction have enjoyed a very collaborative relationship for the last four years. Russell says, “I love the attitude and culture at Windowmakers. Heidi (Managing Director) runs a tight ship and her systems and processes are second to none. I know that the Windowmakers team will always deliver window and door joinery that is made to the highest standards.”

A collaborative relationship
The two companies recently worked together on this massive new build on Waiheke Island. Designed and project managed by Russell, the property is split over three levels, and has six bedrooms, a huge gallery, two kitchens, bathrooms, en suites, a games room and a swimming pool. The modern building has concrete foundations and walls, polished concrete floors, and cedar and plaster cladding. It is set in ten acres of beautiful bush with stunning views all around. Suitable as a function centre, event venue or a lavish home, this contemporary building has it all.

When it came to selecting a joinery supplier, Russell didn’t need to shop around; he explains “My contact at Windowmakers is Paul Keen. He understands the detail involved with projects of this scale, and moreover, he has first-hand experience of the building process. Paul has a great attitude and nothing is too much trouble. I wouldn’t have considered any other joinery supplier for such a big project, requiring quality workmanship and a premium finish.”

Big, bold and beautiful
Having looked through the plans, Russell and Paul discussed how the building and location required joinery that would maximise the panoramic views of the spectacular landscape.

The premium FIRST® APL Architectural Series was specified throughout the property. Russell did not want a colour finish to the joinery, and chose instead to keep the natural metal look. Due to the property’s proximity to the sea and the potential exposure to extreme weather conditions, Paul recommended a durable Anodised Frost finish. With customised flashings to look like the joinery keeps running seamlessly, many of the frames have been purposefully designed to cover a lot of constructual steel which is hidden around the windows. Russell is quick to point out that, “If it looks simple, it’s usually complicated.” Russell also allowed for big pelmets, in case window furnishings are required at a later stage.

Windowmakers suggested installing green tinted glass, which enhances the view by bringing out the emerald colour of the bush. The green colour filters glare from the sun, and helps to reduce the UV rays.

Window fasteners, lever handles, sliding door handles and flush pulls from the Icon range completes the look. The Icon fully integrated range of stainless steel hardware is designed with contemporary square-edge aesthetics with straight lines and gently radiused grips for comfortable operation.

Process driven problem solvers
Before obtaining building consent, Russell approached Windowmakers with his plans. Based on the drawings, Paul was able to schedule everything from special flashing through to joinery hardware and provide provisional costings which also included manufacturing timeframes. As the build progressed, Paul spent two days on site measuring and discussing changes with Russell before confirming the window and door profiles.

One of Windowmakers most experienced joiners undertook the final sign off. This involved a 360 degree review of all of the window and door joinery installation, from removing stickers and tapes, checking glazing rubbers were right, through to ensuring roller doors were running smoothly and all the mechanics were working. When everything was signed off, a ten year warranty pack and recommendations for cleaning and maintaining the aluminium and glass were left for the property owner.

Russell says that his clients are delighted with the finished property, and are pleased with the way that the building sits perfectly in the natural contours of the uneven land. Russell concludes, “As with most things in life, building has its challenges, but it’s not about the challenge, it’s how you deal with it. I know that my relationship with Paul and the Windowmakers team means that we can work on solutions together to achieve the best outcome for my clients.”
