Well connected Back

This home connects with its environment through a range of natural styled aluminium windows and doors from Windowmakers. It is perched on a clifftop with scenic outlooks across Auckland’s Hobson Bay. The home is designed for maximum views and sun, with main rooms arranged around the north axis – as such, window and door treatments were a key part of its success.

Nestled amongst mature pohutukawa trees
“The residence’s east-facing windows were designed with large fixed glass panels to accentuate the views,” says architect Robyn Bilkey.
Bilkey chose anodised aluminium joinery, from Windowmakers’ FIRST® APL Architectural Series, to complement the home’s natural colour palette – grey pre-cast concrete panels mimicking the striations of the cliff below the home, and vertical dark stained, random thickness cedar boards reflecting the texture and shadows of the many mature pohutukawa around the site.
“The finish is also a reference to the old black baches with white joinery of New Zealand’s classic and casual mid-century.”
Windowmakers played a vital part in ensuring her vision for the house was fulfilled from start to finish. For example, enhancing the main entrance by designing a custom door with rustic stained-cedar battens attached, blending it in with the home’s cladding.
Working closely with architects, owners and building companies to achieve the right look for their designs is a passion for all Windowmakers project managers, and Paul Keen, who worked on this elevated project, is no exception.
“Here, the design intention was to achieve a modern look using traditional materials and create a spacious feel inside,” says Keen.

Panoramic viewing windows
Eastern views are enjoyed from the formal living area and deck as well as the master bedroom. The western sun is enjoyed in the casual living area, on the sheltered, louvred deck and study. The substancial double sliding doors from Windowmakers mean the house can open up to the scenery and sun on the eastern deck or the afternoon sun and views of the pohutukawas and valley on the north-west deck.

Windows and Doors: The majority of the joinery was manufactured using FIRST® MetroSeries. The custom front door melds into the exterior with distinctive stained cedar battens mounted on this plasma panel FIRST® APL Architectural Series door.
