Standard
Standard bifold folding doors feature a 2-panel option that folds and stacks to the left or right when opened. Additional panels can be added, with 3, 4 and 6-panel configurations available for larger openings.
Layback Option
A layback option is available for some APL Architectural bifold configurations, allowing the panels to fold back fully—typically to 180°—so they rest flat against the exterior wall. This maximises the opening space, giving the appearance that the doors "disappear" when fully opened. Layback options are ideal for spaces that prioritise open views and unobstructed transitions between interior and exterior areas.
Hinged Door
A hinged door can be added as standalone units or integrated into the stack as a folding hinged door. This serves as a single panel utility door to provide convenient access to both indoor and outdoor spaces without the need to operate the entire folding door system. This option is especially recommended for high-traffic areas, offering quick and easy access to spaces such as living rooms, kitchens, and pool areas.
French
French bifold doors can be added in two ways: one panel can function as a hinged door that opens against the wall, while the other panel is integrated into the bifold stack. Alternatively, they can be centered in a six-panel bifold door configuration, with both panels included in the bifold stack, allowing for a central opening. These options offer convenient access between interior and exterior spaces without needing to operate the full folding door system. Providing similar benefits to a hinged door, but with the added advantage of wider access, creating a more expansive opening.
Centre Opening
Centre opening is available for our 4- and 6-panel bifold glass doors, allowing the panels to fold toward the center. When opened, the two sets of panels stack neatly on either side, creating a focal point for a dramatic entrance that can enhance the aesthetics of your space. This configuration improves the flow between indoor and outdoor areas and invites fresh air into your home.
Overlights
Additional windows can be positioned above the aluminium bifold doors, either as fixed or openable units— ideal for spaces where extra light and airflow are desired.
Are Bifold Doors the Right Choice?
Bifold glass doors have emerged as a preferred option for both residential and architectural applications due to their extensive benefits and adaptable functionality. Our expert team will use their specialised knowledge to guide you in selecting the optimal aluminium door solution for your project, whether it entails bifold doors or an alternative that better meets your specific needs.
Space Maximising: Bifold folding doors stack neatly to one side, maximising usable space. While they do require some external space for stacking when opened, they differ from traditional doors that swing inward or outward by allowing uninterrupted floor space.
View Maximizing: Bifold doors fully open to provide expansive, uninterrupted views. When closed, their slim stiles and top and bottom panel rails reduce visual obstruction.
Indoor Outdoor flow: Bifold doors fully open to eliminate barriers that other aluminium door options may leave behind. This creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing for unobstructed movement and airflow.
Easy Access: Adding a single hinged door or French bifold doors offers convenient access between interior and exterior spaces. This allows for easy opening without needing to operate the entire folding door system.
Complete Your Energy Efficient Window System.
With the recent H1 updates to the New Zealand Building Code, which mandate high-performance insulated glass units with Low-E coatings in thermally enhanced frames, our aluminium bifold door ranges each offer advanced energy-efficient solutions.
Each range is equipped with thermal break aluminium frames featuring ThermalHEART® technology, which incorporates a polyamide strip at the core to reduce heat and cold transfer. For optimal energy efficiency, ThermalHEART® aluminium bifold door frames are paired with The AGP System® Low-E, argon-filled double glazing, nearly doubling the thermal performance compared to standard aluminium window frames.
The Centrafix™ installation system can be used with Metro Series aluminium doors and windows to enhance thermal efficiency by up to 20%. This system recesses frames into the building wall, aligning insulation layers to block cold air circulation and minimize the heat loss commonly associated with standard installations.
