Contemporary Coastal Living

Perched above the stunning Muriwai coastline, Clark House is a contemporary kiwi-inspired bach. Designed by Architecture 27 and built by Best Nest, the home embraces natural materials, expansive glazing and breathtaking 180-degree ocean views.

The design draws inspiration from the client's previous family bach at Leigh, combining the warmth of oak and New Zealand pine with generous glazing to create a strong connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

Every aspect of the home is carefully considered to maximise natural light, capture panoramic coastal views, and provide a front-row seat to the ever-changing west coast – including ideal vantage points for checking the surf.

At the rear, a new accessory building is designed to house four collectible Valiant Charger muscle cars, with colours ranging from bright red and sky-blue to Vitamin C orange.

To align with the project’s premium architectural specification, Windowmakers manufactured and supplied a combination of APL Metro Series and APL Architectural Series aluminium joinery. These systems were also selected for their ability to meet the structural demands of the site's Extra High Wind Zone requirements. The result is a seamless balance of strength, durability, and refined finish, perfectly suited to a coastal home of this calibre.

Outstanding homes are the result of strong partnerships, and working alongside the Best Nest team throughout this project was a fantastic experience.

"Best Nest were an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the entire project. Their commitment to quality was evident at every stage, with a strong focus on maintaining the exceptional standard of finish across all aspects of the build. Clear and proactive communication, excellent coordination, and a collaborative approach allowed us to programme and deliver our work to meet the project's requirements. Their team were professional, approachable and solution-focused, making them a fantastic partner to work alongside, and we look forward to collaborating with them again on future projects." – Paul Keen

Congratulations to Best Nest, Architecture27 and everyone involved in bringing this exceptional home to life. We are proud to have contributed to another outstanding New Zealand architectural project.

1930s Bungalow, Westmere

In a Westmere neighbourhood of timber villas, bungalows and old trees, there was a white stucco house with the charm of a fairytale illustration and a floor plan that had lost the plot.

Drawn to the character of this 1930s bungalow, a young family moved in and chose Rogan Nash Architects to reimagine the home. Keeping the charm of the street frontage, they removed a previous renovation that interrupted the original layout and disconnected the rear of the house from the garden. Rogan Nash extended the roofline into a new living pavilion that steps down the site.

Reinstating the central hallway was the first move, restoring the home's sense of flow and bringing natural light deeper into the plan through carefully positioned skylights.

The front rooms, including the main bedroom with its original leadlight window, were returned close to their original configuration.

A step down into the kitchen, dining room and living spaces, and the ceiling rises with the new, extended roofline.

As the house opens towards the rear, ThermalHeart® aluminium joinery from First Windows & Doors runs full height. Sliders open completely to connect the living room to the deck. All joinery is fitted with AGP double-glazing, and each opening window contributes to cross ventilation, so the house doesn’t rely on artificial cooling. A generous eave and Solux-E low-e glazing protects against overheating, keeping the kitchen, dining and living spaces liveable through orientation rather than technology.

Bush Block, Titirangi

Nestled in the lush bush of Titirangi, this elevated home makes a bold architectural statement while treading lightly on the land. Raised on slender steel poles to avoid the floodplain and minimise ground disturbance, the compact footprint feels spacious and open thanks in large part to the extensive use of aluminium joinery. Large-format windows wrap the home, immersing its occupants in the native canopy, while full-height sliding doors open completely to the landscape. Slimline balustrades provide safety without interrupting the view, creating the sensation of floating among the trees. Awning windows beneath the main glazing panels enable passive cross-ventilation, supporting year-round comfort.

The home’s minimalistic exterior is clad in silvery pressed metal, creating a reflective surface that blends seamlessly into the green surroundings. The narrow, refined frames of the Residential Series were chosen to maintain the clean architectural lines without competing with the natural environment. Inside, a square hallway—bathed in light through generously glazed walls—enhances the sense of space and connection to nature. Paired with earthy tones and tactile materials like cork and macrocarpa, the high-performance aluminium joinery doesn’t just frame views; it anchors the entire living experience, bringing clarity, light, and balance to this peaceful bush retreat.

Prospect House, Mount Eden

This contemporary family home draws inspiration from the client’s childhood memories of her grandparents’ mid-century house. Designed around a series of internal courtyards, it uses aluminium joinery not only for performance but as a central architectural feature—framing views, enhancing natural light, and connecting spaces throughout.

Crafted with a refined palette of APL Metro and APL Architectural Series windows and doors, the joinery plays a key role. Coated aluminium finishes were selected to complement the home’s warm, tactile materials—cedar, stone, and native timber—creating a cohesive and timeless aesthetic.

Expansive aluminium sliding doors open onto eastern and western courtyards, featuring flush sills for a smooth indoor-outdoor flow. These openings invite garden views and dappled light inside, encouraging effortless movement through the home’s courtyard-centric layout.

A glazed link corridor offers a dramatic connection between living wings, using full-height glass to reflect the adjacent pool and reinforce a sense of openness. Meanwhile, a concealed pivot door—perfectly integrated into vertical timber cladding—disappears when closed, showcasing the project’s commitment to seamless design.
